How to Replace a 1998 Ford Belt Tensioner
- 1). Locate the belt routing diagram, either on the radiator shroud or the inside of the hood. If you do not see a routing diagram, sketch a diagram of the belt's route.
- 2). Push the tensioner toward the engine using a socket. Lift the belt off the pulleys. Remove the tensioner-retaining bolt using the appropriate socket. If the new tensioner comes with a pulley, discard the entire used unit. If not, remove the pulley from the tensioner using the appropriate socket or wrench.
- 3). Install the old pulley on the new tensioner. If you purchased a new pulley separate from the new tensioner, install the new pulley on the new tensioner.
- 4). Bolt the tensioner to the block using the appropriate socket. Route the belt around all the pulleys, except for the tensioner, following the belt routing diagram. Using a socket, push the tensioner toward the engine and slide the belt over the tensioner.
