    Annuals

      Larkspur is one of the annual Delphinium varieties. It needs lots of sun and can grow up to five feet tall.

      Cleome, or Spider Flower, is a shrubby flower that loves the sun and grows four to six feet tall and four to five feet wide. Cleome has large flower clusters that open and close daily.

      Cosmos, with its violet and pink daisy-like flowers is easy to grow, loves the sun, and is a good choice for the back of the garden, as it can grow up to eight feet tall.

      Heliotrope, with its sweet fragrance, can grow in sun or partial shade. Flowers range from dark violet to white.

      Lobelia is a trailing plant with tiny, tubular flowers. It prefers a sunny location.

      Nicotiana can be grown in either sun or shade and opens its sweet-smelling flowers in the evening.

      Petunias are one of the easiest plants for the gardener to grow. Their sweet smell and long flowering season keep them on everyone's list.

      Stock is valued most for its sweet fragrance. It needs good sunlight and fertile soil.

      Snapdragon, sometimes called the queen of the cottage garden, is great for cutting and grows in white and many other colors.

      Hollyhock is a classic English garden plant, growing up to nine feet tall. It has delicate flowers in a full range of bright and pastel colors.

      Columbine grows in either sun or shade. It is an early spring bloomer with delicate dangling blooms.

      Campanula, or Bellflower, is so named for the cluster of bell-shaped flowers in blue, violet, pink or white. Campanula grows in either filtered shade or full sun.

      Centaurea produces frilly, violet flowers with gray-green leaves. It does well in filtered shade or sunny spots.

      Delphiniums are a mainstay of any cottage garden and need full sun to thrive. Their blue flowers are excellent for cutting.

      Dianthus, also known as Pinks, Sweet William, and Carnation, produces flowers with a rich, spicy fragrance. Dianthus does best in full sun but can grow in lightly shaded areas as well.

      Digitalis, or Foxglove, grows well in shade and is said to be deer resistant.

      Heuchera, or Coral Bells, grows in mounded shapes and does well in either sun or shade.

      Lavender grows best in a well-drained and sunny spot in the garden.

      Malva is a relative of the Hollyhock and has similar delicate flowers. Malva prefers sun and can grow two to three feet tall.

    Plants That Can Be Either Annual or Perennial

      Bachelor's Button, or Cornflower, is easy to grow and is great for cutting. It grows about one foot tall and comes in a variety of colors.

      Lobelia, a trailing plant with bright red or blue flowers, can grow in either sun or shade.

      Nasturtiums are hardy, lush, and come in all shades of yellow and orange. They can tolerate both sun and shade. Both the leaves and flowers are wonderful salad additions.

      Pansies come in all colors and grow well in shaded spots in the garden.
