Why I Need Proof of Auto Registration for a Job Interview
- Although many people use their personal vehicles to get to work, some positions require that the employee use a personal vehicle during work hours for job-related tasks. For example, you might be interviewing as a courier, delivery driver, real estate agent or child-care provider. In this case, the employer might require you to prove that your car is legally registered before offering you the job.
- Your vehicle's in-state registration card is the best proof of registration to bring to the interview. However, in some cases, you might not have a current registration card. For example, you might have applied for renewal and even though your application was received and processed by the deadline, you have not yet received your new registration card in the mail. In this case, provide a receipt or online confirmation from your paid registration to show that you are current.
- Although the interviewer might not mention it, you should also bring your driver's license and proof of auto insurance to the interview. These related documents will help the employer assess your legal ability to drive the car on the job. Plus, bringing them will show that you are mindful and thorough. The employer might run a background check on your driving record, so be honest about anything the employer might find. It is better to mention and explain an accident than to have the employer find out later that your driving record has blemishes.
- When you will be expected to drive your personal vehicle for work, ask about mileage reimbursement. The employer might pay you for each mile you drive, especially if driving is a required part of the job. If you don't get reimbursed, you can at least deduct the operating costs for work-related travel in your car. This includes gas, oil changes and depreciation.
