What Is the Shift Pattern for a CJ 7 Jeep?
- The CJ7 model was released in 1976. It had a longer wheelbase, larger doors and a removable plastic hard top. Previous models -- such as the CJ5 and CJ6 -- did not have these options. The CJ7 hung remained in production until 1987, when it was replaced by the Wrangler. The Wrangler remains in production in 2011.
- Many four-cylinder CJ7s came with a four-speed, manual transmission. The transmission was set up with first gear up and to the left, second gear back and to the left, third gear up and to the right and fourth gear back and to the middle. The reverse gear was back and to the right.
- The six-cylinder 4.0 version of the CJ7 was offered with a five-speed manual transmission. The transmission was set up with first gear up and to the left, second gear back and to the left, third gear up and to the middle, fourth gear back and to the middle, fifth gear up and to the right, and reverse back and to the right.
