    General Housekeeping

    • Vacuum often to control adult fleas in the carpet, if fleas are bad, vacuum every day until the problem subsides. A single moth ball or a cut-up flea collar placed in the vacuum bag will kill any eggs that hatch, or fleas that survive in the vacuum cleaner. While it may seem preferable to shampoo or steam clean the rug, flea eggs and larvae like humidity. Do not shampoo or steam clean a rug while you are battling fleas.

    Considerations

    • Fleas do not like oregano. After vacuuming the carpet, sprinkle the carpet with a mixture of baking soda and oregano, wait an hour then vacuum again. The room will smell great and fleas will feel unwelcome.

A dehumidifier helps fight flea infestations because eggs and larvae need humidity to survive. They love a warm, wet rug. In very dry areas substantially fewer flea eggs hatch than in humid areas.

    Expert Insight

    • Sprinkle diatomaceous earth (DE) or borax powder on carpets. DE is available in hardware and garden supply stores and borax is available in the laundry aisle of grocery stores. DE must be handled with care -- wear protective goggles and face mask when working with DE. DE is a sharp dust that kills fleas , and can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs of humans. It is not poisonous to humans. When dusting the rug with DE, dust some in the cracks and crevices in the floor because fleas live in those areas. Dust the rug with DE or borax, wait an hour or so then vacuum.
