How to Detect a Leak in a Vinyl Liner in an Inground Pool

    • 1). Fill your pool to its normal level and mark the water level with a piece of tape. Visually inspect around the pool edges to look for any tears or changes in the lining.

    • 2). Inspect the pool 24 hours later and measure the change in the water level. If the water has gone down at least 1 inch, you have a leak. Perform another inspection around the water line for tears or changes in the lining.

    • 3). Enter your pool and start inspecting around all the fittings first, such as lights, skimmers, drains and returns. This will be easier if your pool is operational and the water is clear. Use goggles or a diving mask so you have a clear view.

    • 4). Check the seams of the vinyl liner, as well as the corners of the pool and around steps and ladders.

    • 5). Place a few drops of dye anywhere you suspect a leak. The dye will disappear through the tear or pinhole if one is present. Make sure the filter is off when performing a dye test, so you can get accurate results.
