How to Port Small Block Chevrolet Cylinder Heads
- 1). Secure the cylinder head in a vise or other clamping device. Examine the narrow channel just above the valve. It's the least efficient part of the channel because the air flow is often disrupted by ridges and improper casting.
- 2). Use the rotary grinder and the carbide cutter to remove metal from inside the channel for a half inch above the valve seat. The goal is to make the channel look like the bell of a trumpet, a very smooth and gradual widening of the channel. You will do this free-hand. The carbide cutter removes a lot of metal with very little force so move gently. Secure the cylinder head so you're pressing the grinder down on the metal. Do one half of the grinding then turn the cylinder head over.
- 3). Use the cylinder shaped polishing rolls mounted on the electric drill to polish the areas you worked on.
- 4). Wipe down all of the areas that were ground with clean cloth to remove any metal debris.
