How to Create Your Own Hat

    • 1). Cut a rectangle that measures 23 inches wide and 15 inches tall from the fleece fabric. The side of the fabric that has the most stretch to it should be the width because this part goes around the head.

    • 2). Fold the rectangle in half, with the right sides together, so it measures 11.5 by 15 inches. Pin the fabric in place.

    • 3). Sew the fleece along the longest end of the fabric, using a ¼-inch seam allowance. You will now have a tube that measures 15 inches tall; remove the pins.

    • 4). Adjust the fabric so the seam you just sewed is no longer at one end of the tube, but lies in the middle of it. Pin the fabric at the top of the tube.

    • 5). Sew the top of the tube of fabric, where you just placed the pins, using a ¼-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins.

    • 6). Square the top of the hat. With the hat still inside out, grab one of the corners at the top of the tube and flatten it out so a forms a triangle, as if you were going to create cat ears that face out the side. Fold the triangle over so the tip of it touches the middle of the top of the tube. The sewn seam at the top of the tube will run up the middle of the triangle formed, so it should line up when you fold the corner of the tube to the middle. Pin the fabric in place and repeat with the other corner.

    • 7). Sew the triangles at the top of the tube in place by sewing straight from one base of a triangle to the other. Remove the pins.

    • 8). Find the 10- to 11-inch point on the hat's length. Fold the fabric under this point so it forms a cuff on the inside of the hat. Pin the fabric in place and sew.

    • 9). Turn the hat right side out, after removing the pins, and fold the cuff you just sewed out if you want it to be visible. Pin the fabric in place and sew.
