How to Change the Power Steering Fluid in a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500
- 1). Raise the truck's front end and support it with jack stands. Raise the hood and locate the power steering fluid reservoir, which is labeled.
- 2). Remove the cap and use a large syringe to remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir. Deposit it in a resealable plastic or metal container.
- 3). Follow the hose from the reservoir to find the power steering pump. Place plastic sheeting over the serpentine belt to protect it from power steering fluid spills or drips.
- 4). Locate the two low-pressure hoses connected to the pump. Those are the hoses with standard hose clamps holding them in place, not the ones that screw into special fittings on the pump. Loosen the hose clamps with a screwdriver and remove the hoses. Drain the power steering fluid from the hoses and pump into a drain pan.
- 5). Turn the key until the steering wheel unlocks, but don't start the engine. Turn the wheel back and forth as far as it will go until no more fluid drains from the hoses.
- 6). Reconnect the hoses and tighten the hose clamps. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with fresh power steering fluid. Remove the plastic sheeting from the serpentine belt.
- 7). Turn the steering wheel back and forth as far as it will go, adding fluid to the reservoir as the level drops. When the level stops dropping, put the cap on, start the engine and turn the wheel back and forth another 10 times. Turn off the engine and check the level again, adding more fluid if necessary.
- 8). Repeat steps 2 through 7 to flush the power steering system thoroughly. Replace the cap on the reservoir, close the hood, and lower the truck from the jack stands.
