How Do I Grow Amaryllis From Seed?
- 1). Allow the amaryllis to develop seed pods. These grow quickly following pollination and should be mature within four to five weeks. Each pod contains 100 or more black seeds.
- 2). Remove ripened seed pods from the plant. The seed pods begin to turn into a yellow color and start to open up when they are ready to be picked. Take the seeds out of the pod for planting and place the seeds to be planted in a bowl of water overnight and refrigerate any seeds you do not plan on planting.
- 3). Prepare the seed bed and plant the seeds. Put seeds approximately 1/4-inch deep in builder's sand and plant them thick enough to be touching one another. Seeds need partial shade until after germination, along with frequent watering. At this point, they can be moved to an area with more sun, according to the University of Nebraska.
- 4). Continue caring for your plants by watering and fertilizing while they grow larger. Apply liquid fertilizer of 200 ppm N (parts per million of nitrogen) about one month after seedlings first appear. Fertilize again at four months with a 500 ppm N application and once again at six months, this time with an 800 ppm N concentration. Seeds typically grow quickly and with few problems.
- 5). Divide the small bulbs, known as bulblets, as they grow. Do this between three and five months and again at 10 months. Place bulbs in individual pots at 10 months as well. Pot them with about half the bulb above the surface to avoid red blotch, a disease common to amaryllis.
