How to Install an Auto Car Starter
- 1). Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Disconnect the battery by unbolting the negative and positive cable from the battery terminal.
- 2). Locate the starter by identifying where the engine and transmission are connected to the flywheel. The starter is mounted by the flywheel to the frame.
- 3). Disconnect the positive cable by unbolting the stud with a socket wrench. Pull the cable off the stud. Wrap the positive cable with masking tape. This will help to identify the positive cable from the negative.
- 4). Unbolt the negative cable from the stud. Place the cable to the side.
- 5). Unbolt the two bolts holding the starter to the frame with a socket wrench. Depending on the vehicle there may be a third bolt. Pull the starter away from the frame. If the starter is stubborn and will not come down, tap it with a hammer. This will loosen the starter.
- 6). Place the starter in the box that the new starter came in. The old starter can be returned to the automotive-parts store to redeem the core charge that was initially charged upon purchase of the starter.
- 1). Bolt the new starter to the frame. Push the starter to the frame and align the bolt holes on the starter with the bolt holes already bored for the new starter.
- 2). Unscrew the stud on the negative stud. Slide the negative lead on the stud and tighten the bolt down to secure the lead. Repeat the same for the positive lead. The studs will be marked with a positive or negative symbol to ensure the cables are connected to the proper stud.
- 3). Connect the battery by placing the positive cable over the positive terminal and the negative cable over the remaining terminal.
- 4). Start the car to ensure the starter is functioning correctly. There should be no hesitation once the key is turned and the car will start right away.
