How to Replace the Alternator Belt on the 1993 Laser
- 1). Lift the hood and prop it open.
- 2). Locate the alternator on the front right side of the engine. Look for the adjustable tensioner for the alternator belt, located on the lower left side of the alternator.
- 3). Locate the locking nut in the middle of the adjustable pulley. Loosen the locking nut by turning it counterclockwise with the ratchet and a socket.
- 4). Locate the adjustment bolt on the right side of the pulley. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to loosen the tension on the belt. Pull the belt out of the alternator pulley, the air conditioner pulley and the crankshaft pulley.
- 5). Hold the old belt next to the new belt to make sure that the new belt is the proper length. Route the new belt around the three pulleys.
- 6). Tighten the belt by turning the adjustment bolt clockwise with the ratchet and socket. Once the belt is tight, check the tension of the belt by pushing down on it. The belt should have only about half an inch of slack in it. If the belt is too tight or too loose, adjust accordingly. Once that the belt is properly tightened so that there is only half an inch of slack in it, tighten the locking nut in the middle of the pulley with the ratchet and socket.
- 7). Inspect the new alternator belt to make sure that it is properly seated inside all three pulleys. Crank the 1993 Plymouth Laser for about 10 seconds to seat the belt completely inside the pulleys.
- 8). Turn off the engine and close the hood.
