How to Remove Trailer Brake Drums
- 1). Lift up the trailer using the jack and place it on jack stands. Make sure the trailer is secure before you crawl underneath it. Using the tire iron, remove the tires and place them to the side.
- 2). Use the mallet to tap off the dust cover on the center of the drum on the axle, tapping it until the nut inside is exposed. Use the cotter pin puller tool to remove the cotter pin in the middle of the drum, and then unbolt the drum cover from the axle shaft using a 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.
- 3). Unbolt the brake drum housing from the axle using a 1/2-inch ratchet and socket, unbolting it from the rear. Slide the drum off of the axle shaft and place it to the side.
