- 1). Purchase an electric brake controller compatible with your fifth wheel and tow vehicle. Proportional controllers use a motion sensor to detect how fast the tow rig is decelerating and stop the fifth wheel accordingly. Conversely, time delayed controllers apply a set amount of braking power, determined by the user, each time the tow rig brakes are applied. Choose a type of controller based on your personal preferences and budget.
- 2). Wire the controller to the tow vehicle in order to supply power to the controller itself and the trailer's braking system when in use. Purchase a quick connect harness from your vehicle's manufacturer, or wire the controller using a universal method. For universal wiring, connect the white wire to a ground source. Solder the red wire to the cold side of the stop light switch on the brake pedal. Route the black wire through an automatic reset circuit breaker and onto the vehicle's positive battery terminal. Run the blue wire to the trailer connector to supply power to the fifth wheel brakes.
- 3). Mount the fifth wheel brake controller inside the cab of the vehicle once wiring is complete. Select a location that is easily accessible while the vehicle is in motion, such as below the dash or on top of the dash near the middle of the windshield. Install the mounting bracket and secure the controller into the bracket. Depending on the specific controller, you may need to level the device so that it sits directly parallel to the vehicle.
- 4). Hitch the tow vehicle to the fifth wheel after wiring the brake controller and mounting it on. Set the brake control adjustments according to the manufacturer's guidelines on a flat, paved surface before embarking on a trip with your fifth wheel and new brake controller.
