Asparagus Fern Removal

    • 1). Cut your asparagus fern plants down to the ground with pruning shears. Discard all clippings. The plants will grow back, but continue cutting them. Eventually, cutting exhausts the plant rhizomes, so your asparagus fern will cease regrowth, leaving your yard weed-free. This method can take a while to work, but it does not introduce chemicals to your home.

    • 2). Dig out asparagus fern using a shovel or trowel. Dig underneath the soil to expose the plant roots, then grasp the fern and pull up. Remove the plant and all roots from the soil, then remove all fern plants in this manner. This mechanical control can be time-consuming, but will kill the plant.

    • 3). Spray asparagus fern plants with a glyphosate herbicide for chemical control. Mix a 1 percent glyphosate solution with water following the recommended dose range on your package of herbicide. Add in a 0.25 percent surfactant -- a "wetting agent" that helps the herbicide work, such as palm oil or castor oil -- to maximize effectiveness. Place the herbicide solution in a spray bottle and spray the ferns. Within a couple of days the ferns will die; pull them out by hand. Repeat the glyphosate treatment as necessary to completely eradicate asparagus fern.
