Tips on Removing Scratches

    Scuff Scratches

    • Scratches that are light and resemble scuff marks are the easiest to remove. If the scratch does not go through the layer of clear coat on the car, it can be removed by hand. Use Meguir's ScratchX on a microfiber pad. Rub back and forth over the scratch, moving across the scratch, not length-wise. Wipe the scratch remover away with a clean microfiber towel to see the results. If the scratch is very visible, repeat the rubbing process.
Once the scratch is less noticeable, apply some car polish to a clean microfiber towel and polish the area until it shines. A coat of wax can be applied to protect the area.

    Medium Scratches

    • Scratches that go beneath the clear coat cannot be rubbed smooth. These types of scratches require a thin coat or two of touch-up paint. Touch-up paint can be found for any color vehicle by ordering online or visiting the local dealership.
Touch-up paint should be applied after the scratch has been cleaned and dried. Wipe some wax and grease remover over the area. Use a cotton swab or touch-up paint applicator to add paint to the scratch. A brush shouldn't be used because of the lack of control over the bristles. Add a thin coat to the scratch and allow it to dry for a few hours. Add another coat and allow it to dry also. If you have clear coat paint, you can cover the area, but it's not necessary.
This method works well for very small nicks and scratches in the car's paint.

    Deep Scratches

    • Deep scratches that reach the bare metal of the paint have to be sanded and painted. Use a fine grade of sand paper, between 800 and 1,000 grit, to sand the scratch smooth. Use a spray gun to spray a thin coat of primer over the sanded area. Sand the primer with 1,200-grit sand paper and then spray two thin coats of paint to match the car, allowing each coat to dry for 30 minutes before applying the next coat.
While spraying the paint, stay directly over the scratched and sanded area. Along the edges where the new paint will meet the existing paint, add 1/4 paint thinner to the paint in the spray gun. This thins the paint and helps blend it in with the existing paint. Allow the paint to dry and then spray two layers of clear coat, allowing each layer to dry for 30 minutes.
