How to Change a Fuel Filter on a Super Duty 7.3
- 1). Open the hood and locate the plastic cover bearing the words "7.3 liter Powerstroke" on top of the engine at the front and center. Remove the two retaining nuts from the top of the cover with a 13 mm socket and ratchet wrench. Lift the cover straight up and flip it over to the side to reveal the fuel filter housing.
- 2). Place a drain pan on the ground directly under the fuel filter housing. Locate the drain valve lever on the back side of the fuel filter housing and rotate it towards the passenger side of the truck. Allow the fuel contained in the housing (only a few ounces) to flow into the drain pan. Close the lever by rotating it toward the engine firewall.
- 3). Unscrew the round lid from the top of the fuel filter housing in a counterclockwise direction. Use a large pair of locking pliers to grasp the edges of the lid if it will not turn by hand. Place the cover aside.
- 4). Lift the old fuel filter element straight up from the housing and discard it. Push a new O-ring gasket over the end of a fresh fuel filter. Work the gasket into the groove at the base of the filter. Push the filter into the housing until it is fully seated.
- 5). Remove the old rubber gasket from the fuel filter housing lid. Push a new gasket into its place. Screw the cover back onto the housing by hand until it makes contact with the housing.
- 6). Turn the ignition key to "RUN" and leave it there without starting the engine for approximately 30 seconds, as this will turn on the fuel pump, filling the filter housing with fuel. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes until it is running smoothly with no smoke from the tail pipe. Check the filter cover for leaks and tighten the lid as needed with locking pliers.
- 7). Replace the engine cover and tighten the retaining nuts. Close the hood. Remove the drain pan from under the truck.
