Bright yellow is among the most challenging colors to work with, yet it remains popular because of the cheer and energy it lends to a room. Decorating a bright yellow bedroom means making choices about other aspects of the room to either tone down or play up the bright paint on the walls. - When yellow is the predominant color in a room, it's best to select other colors that are calm and that combine with yellow in a sophisticated way in order to avoid having the room look too juvenile or too busy. Choose pale greens, grays and white for your other main colors. Small accents of blue, red, orange and black can also work well.
- Prints that combine yellow with your accent colors add cheer to the room without the brightness becoming too much. Depending on your decor, 1930s pastel prints can add an element of Art Deco-era whimsy. Geometric prints or textured solids are an appropriate choice for modern decor. For Victorian-era styles, choose William Morris or Charles Rennie Mackintosh reproductions that combine darker shades of yellow with other rich tones.
- A yellow carpet can work in a room with yellow walls without looking too strong. Simply choose either very light or dark shades, such as mustard; shades that are nearly brown are especially complementary. A pale beige carpet is also appropriate. If the walls are not all yellow, consider carpet with a pattern, such as a bold floral design.
- Bringing bright yellow furniture into a bright yellow bedroom can be overkill. Instead, choose furniture in medium to dark natural wood tones, or painted furniture in the same shades as the accent colors from your room textiles and carpeting. Add a few rich or bright colors to the mix to make the room decor energetic without being too obtrusive.
