For many people out there, being self-employed was not a voluntary choice. Rather, it was a status imposed on them by the current recession, which has only just recently begun showing signs of easing. Having lost their jobs, many people found it next to impossible getting gainful employment elsewhere. The fact of the matter is that there are now more dogs than bones, where jobs are concerned, and employers can pick and choose at their leisure. With the bills still coming in, mortgage and car payments etc. still having to be made, people began looking at other options instead of a regular nine to five job.

One of the solutions arrived at, was to work from home. It would seem some of the luster has gone from the sheen of a regular job, and the prestige once associated with it has waned. Unlike in times gone by, when most people only worked from home to get extra money to supplement their income, to work from home now is the primary source of income for a lot of people. It just so happens that a lot of the people considered rich today had similar beginnings and are currently self-employed too. Chances are they will tell you that starting your own business is one of the best moves you could ever make.

It has not been easy for some, making the transition from working at the office and getting a paycheck at the end of the month to being self-employed and getting income from home. For those who found it traumatic, however, they may have found out that there is some truth to the saying, that there is a silver lining behind every dark cloud. This silver lining takes the form of advantages arising from starting your own business and becoming self-employed.

Perhaps the biggest benefit to be reaped is in the savings department. Unless you lived around the corner from your former workplace, you will now save all that money you always spent on transportation getting to and from work. Whether it is gas and tires for the car for forty-mile commutes, or just bus fare; all that will be eliminated. Also, you won't have to buy lunch daily; the funds so saved could do a million other things. Another advantage to being self-employed is that you are now your own boss and how hard, fast, or even when you work, is determined by you. There is no one to tell you that you can't get Thursday off.

The level of pressure and stress associated with deadlines and timetables from your office job will disappear, which can only lead to a healthier you. Many a time the job we do at the office is not something we truly enjoy, but do it for the sake of earning an income. In starting your own business it is highly likely that you will choose something you love and enjoy doing.

Being around one's family is considered important for many, and being self-employed affords more opportunity for this. For those with children, seeing them off to school and being there to greet them when they return is an added bonus. There is also the freedom of having total control of your money and how you dress.

Having whetted their appetites at the table of "income from home" and experienced first-hand what the extra money can do, many will tell you they have absolutely no intention of going back to a regular office gig. Would you blame them?
