    • 1). Test the soil pH of your potting or garden soil using a soil pH kit to determine whether the soil is suitable for your plant. Use the instructions on the pH testing kit packaging to perform the test properly. Contact your local university extension for your plants' specific pH requirements, but most plants like a slightly acidic soil between 5.5 and 6.5.

    • 2). Water your plants regularly to keep the soil moist but not wet. Stick your finger 2 inches into the soil to check the watering depth. If it is dry further down, water a bit more. Water slowly so that water is absorbed evenly.

    • 3). Fertilize your plants according to your specific plants requirements. Contact your local university extension for your plants' specific fertilizing requirements. Fertilize indoor plants with a water-soluble fertilizer every two to three weeks.

    • 4). Apply mulch on top of your plant soil to retain moisture, recommends the University of Florida Extension. Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch, keeping the mulch at least 1 to 2 inches away from the stem of the plant to prevent disease and rot.

    • 5). Place your plants where they receive the proper amount of light for the variety. Most plants require eight to 12 hours of sunlight a day but require different intensities.
