In The Garden
The plants we use, garden mulch, the type of lawn we put down and even the amount of concrete and paving we use in and around our gardens and entertaining area all affect the water use of the area.
Any nursery worth its salt can provide you with the guidance that you need to select the right type of plants for your area soil, type and the look that you're trying to achieve and this can all be done with plants that don't require a lot of water. Lawns are very similar, the range of lawns for shaded, full sun, hot and cool climates is in a word vast, and a blend of lawn seed can be tailor made to suite your specific needs.
Although we may believe that paving and concreted areas require less water, in hot weather these areas radiate heat back up onto your home and garden increasing the temperature and therefore the water use of the plants in your garden and lawn. Paved areas are great but they do really need to be shaded even when you're not entertaining.
While we are doing some work in the garden as we go we can put in a watering system that will help us to use our water more effectively. In ground, watering timers and drip systems are all great options for saving water. Watering you plants for 20 minutes twice a week rather than 10 mins a day helps in a couple of ways.
Watering for longer allows the water to soak deeper into the ground which draws the roots of the plants deeper into the ground , this in its self helps to drought proof the garden and the maths is simple 40 mins of water is a lot less than 70 mins of water. Watering in the middle of the night means 2 benefits, less evaporation and because of less demand possibly better water pressure to run your sprinklers and watering systems.
