How to Make a Feather Mantle

    • 1). Lay sheet of Styrofoam on a flat workspace. You may want to place a cutting mat or a cutting board beneath it.

    • 2). Cut out two large basic leaf shapes -- essentially ovals with pointed tips on each end -- from the foam. You want the foam leafs to be the same size. Cutting free-form shapes is fine, but you also can draw the shape directly on the foam sheets using a permanent marker.

    • 3). Place a glue stick in a hot glue gun and plug the gun into a power outlet. Allow the glue to heat up for a few minutes.

    • 4). Cut off the point of one end of each leaf so they have blunt ends. Squeeze glue on the blunt ends and connect them. Now you have one fluid foam piece.

    • 5). Squeeze glue on the back of the feathers and place them one at a time on the foam. Blow on the glue for about 3 seconds before placing it on the foam to help prevent the foam from melting. Once the mantle is covered with feathers, glue faux leaves and fruits such as apples and pears on top of the feathers to create a unique dining room table centerpiece.
