Card Games for Kids With Only One Person

    • One-player card games are a great way for a child to stay occupied and quiet when they don't have someone to play with. Typical card games for one person are generally from the family of Solitaire. There are several versions of Solitaire, one of the most popular being Klondike Solitaire. Concentration is another familiar one-person card game.

    Klondike Solitaire - Layout

    • Klondike Solitaire is one of the best-known one-player card games. This game uses all cards except the Jokers of a standard 52-card deck of playing cards. Starting at the left side of the playing area, deal one upturned card. Next to that card in "position 1," deal six downturned cards, in "positions 2-7." Next, deal a card face up on top the facedown "position 2" card and place downturned cards on cards "3-7." Place a card face up on "position 3" and face-down cards on "4-7." Continue laying out cards in same pattern until all piles have an upturned card on top. The rest of the cards form the "stock" pile.

    Klondike Solitaire - Play

    • Play the game by placing lower cards in sequence on a card of an alternate-colored suite. For example, move an upturned red Queen onto a black King, and a black 8 on a red 9. Do this for all possible face-up cards. When a face-down card becomes available (by moving the face up card on top of it to another column), then turn the face-down card face up. When no more cards can be moved, turn up a card from the "stock" pile and play it. If it cannot be played, put it face up in a discard pile, where it will be available should a card become available where it can be played.

    Klondike Solitaire - Object

    • When a column empties, fill it with a King and any cards below it from another column. After all cards are played, there should be four piles, each with a King at the top, followed by consecutive numbers of altering colors down to the 2. When an Ace is exposed, set it aside face up. When the 2 card of that suit is exposed, move the 2 to cover the Ace, making that pile now ready for the 3 of that suit. The object is to move all the cards from the original seven columns to the four Aces, building from Ace to King.

    Concentration/Memory Game

    • This game is fun to play with a special deck of cards that has fun pictures or with a regular deck of cards. This game can be played with one or more players.
First, shuffle the cards and then lay them out facedown in a grid design (for example, four rows of cards with four cards in each row). Flip over one card and then another, trying to find matches. If they don't match, turn them back over and try again. As matches are made, set them aside or leave them face up. The object is to remember where the cards are and make matches as quickly as possible.
