    • 1). Decide how many burners are needed. A single-burner stove will not be much of a burden on a long-distance hike to camp. A two-burner stove is heavier and takes up more space in a backpack, but it allows multiple dishes to cook at once.

    • 2). Be sure the butane camp stove fits your budget. Single-burner butane camp stoves range from $29 to $75. Dual-burner stoves can range from $39 to $150. Do not neglect quality to save a few bucks.

    • 3). Review the control knobs. Some burners burn at a single height. Others have control knobs that allow for adjustable flame height.

    • 4). Determine what type of ignition is needed. For instance, some butane camp stoves have electronic ignition, while others use a pilot light. Electronic ignition systems do not require extra accessories. A pilot light requires matches or a lighter.

    • 5). Compare the features. For instance, see if the stove comes with a stand that can elevate the stove, or if it has short, fold-out legs to better operate on uneven ground. Some butane stoves also accept other fuels, such as propane or isobutene, which makes them more versatile.

    • 6). Consider the stove's durability. Be sure the butane camp stove is solid enough to withstand long hikes to the campsite. Flimsy butane camp stoves can tip or tilt during cooking and create an unsafe environment.
