The word free does have a certain attraction and the word divorce likewise can carry a strong emotional message.
And it is also a fact that divorce is much more common today than in previous generations and another fact is that obtaining that divorce can be a loss less expensive than in previous decades.
Free advice is, no pun intended, freely available today.
There are publications and web sites which clearly describe a variety of marriage situations and what can be done if the couple intends to divorce.
Advice on divorce for both men and women is set out without cost.
This article provides information which may well be helpful and which most certainly is free.
No-fault divorce.
This means the two spouses agree to separate without blaming the other.
They may well blame the other in private but before a court, in public at least, they each concede the other is not to blame for the breakdown of their marriage.
Estimates today are that as few as 1 in 20 divorces are contested.
This means that the vast majority of couples reckon it's a heck of a lot cheaper and certainly a lost less traumatic to get the divorce over and done with as soon and as cheaply as possible.
If a marriage has no children, no mortgage and few assets, the divorce, on paper at least, could not be simpler.
When there is a child or children, shared ownership of real estate and assets which are joint-owned, then to avoid a judge making decisions re new ownership and child care arrangements, the divorcing couple must sort out the split.
This can be done with lawyers [costly], with a mediator [less costly] or between one another [little if any cost].
Child care.
Any divorce which has one or more dependent children from that relationship will require a decision on who looks after the children.
There are many variations.
One parent has the children all the time, one has the children all the time with visitation rights to the other spouse or the children are shared between the parents.
And of course with these latter two scenarios there is any number of variations.
The key here though is agreement.
If the couple can agree to an arrangement, a judge will almost certainly approve an agreement as part of the divorce.
When a judge is required to rule because the couple cannot agree on child responsibility issues, the mother in most cases is given sole custody with visitation rights usually afforded to the father.
The percentage of decisions in favor of the mother has been dropping in recent years but the majority of divorces still have the mother as the sole or main carer.
Using a lawyer may be the best route for any parent wishing to contest this issue - and this divorce advice applies equally to men and women.
Undoubtedly divorce is more common today.
But if it seems a likely possibility in your marriage, take note that you can obtain your divorce with a lot less stress and for a lot less money than ever before.
Divorce may be more prevalent but advice about divorce has never been more widespread and so free.
