Dandelion Root Safety
- People who are allergic to plants such as daisies, marigolds, chrysanthemums and ragweed may be allergic to dandelion root. Serious allergic reactions are rare, according to WebMD. The symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include breathing difficulties, dizziness, itching or swelling in the facial area or rash.
- Avoid taking dandelion products with antibiotics as it may lessen the amount of antibiotic the body absorbs. Dandelion contains large amounts of potassium, so do not use dandelion in combination with other pills that increase the amount of potassium in the body. Dandelion worsens the side effects associated with using lithium, a medication prescribed to treat bipolar disorder.
- Pregnant women and nursing mothers should not use dandelion products. People who have liver disease, gallbladder problems, high levels of potassium in the blood or intestinal problems should consult a physician before using dandelion root.
