Guide to Care for Bromeliad Plants
- 1). Plant the bromeliad in a pot that has drainage holes so that water won't soak the soil. Do not over water. Add water to the plant itself and then a little around the base to dampen the soil. The leaves will funnel the water you pour into the center down into the plant.
- 2). Wait about a week before watering again. Check to see that the soil is dry before watering. The plants cannot tolerate wet soil.
- 3). Place the plant in an indirectly lit area of the home. These plants do not like direct sunlight. Bromeliads will burn in sunlight. Do not place them near light bulbs either, because the heat can damage the plant. You know it is in the correct lighting if you hold a hand up to the plant and you see only the slightest shadow cast on the leaves.
- 4). Cut the bloom out of the center when it starts to die. Use a knife as far down as you can get in the center of the plant and cut the bloom out.
