How to Become an Energy Star Certified Builder
- 1). Familiarize yourself with the Energy Star performance guidelines. These guidelines determine whether or not a home fits the current criteria for being energy efficient. There are two main routes in which a home may meet the standards --- the National Performance Path and National Prescriptive Path --- in addition to some special county-level and regional specifications. Knowing what methods apply to you and your field will help you be better prepared and can possibly accelerate the process of certification.
- 2). Get your projects rated. You can do this by getting in touch with an area Home Energy Rater so your current projects may be evaluated to see if they are being constructed to the current Energy Star directives. To find a Home Energy Rater in your location, visit the main Energy Star Website and click: New Homes > Partner Locator. Choose the radio button for Home Energy Raters, select your state, and then click search. Note, not all states will have raters close to the chosen locale.
- 3). Complete the Energy Star Partnership Agreement. This Web-based form is used to help you understand how to properly utilize the Energy Star mark and name. You will be asked about things like what kind of builder you are and what kinds of homes you build in addition to being required to review the Energy Star terms and disclaimers; establish a designated signor; select a local Home Energy Rater; submit general company information such as the address, phone, number of homes built, etc.; supply a main contact person; note what optional commitments are being made; and choose whether or not to be included in the Energy Star Homes Partner Locator.
- 4). Have your home(s) examined by the Home Energy Rater once the application process is complete. If the home meets or exceeds the requirements for Energy Star, it is then that you will be able to affix the Energy Star label on the eligible home as well as have access to use the myriad of promotional assets available to certified builders.
