    • The goal of modifying your behavior with a diet should be to make new eating habits. For weight loss to be successful you must change your eating habits permanently. This can be done with an abrupt change to a new diet, however this can be unsuccessful as learning to actually like healthy foods when you have had a steady diet of high sugar, high fat, highly palatable food can take a while. Trying to make small changes towards a more healthful eating plan can be more successful.

      Also finding areas of your life that trigger you to binge eat or eat high calorie food can be helpful as you can then avoid or limit your exposure to the things that make you overeat. This can be the most crucial change you make to successful weight loss. Stress is often a significant cause of binging or overeating. Perhaps you need to change jobs, change your relationships, or find a new home to reduce some of the daily stresses that drive you to eat.

    Diets

    • There are some tricks to help you in your daily battle to change your habits. The first is to try and plan your meals ahead of time. If you know your going to a dinner party or social gathering where there will be food, try filling up on veggies or other healthy snacks before you go. At dinner fill up on salad before the entrée comes so you won't be as hungry for the higher calorie portion of the meal. If you need to feel full despite trying to eat less you can try drinking a couple glasses of water before you eat so that your stomach is stretched out before you dine. This can lead to you feeling fuller faster and you will eat less.

      Another tip is to make deals with yourself about eating foods that are 'bad' for you. Say you have a serious sweet tooth but are trying to avoid the high calorie treats. Plan to avoid them completely for five days then reward yourself with a full calorie version of your favorite sweet at the end of those five days. This way you have an attainable goal and reward. The time frame is not so long there is no end in sight and your not completely depriving yourself of your favorite things. Little deals like this can help you make the diet changes permanent.
