    Planting New Plants

    • Plant Trillium grandiflorum in spring when the ground thaws and is easy to work. Like most herbaceous perennials, Trillium grandiflorum can be planted in spring, summer or fall, but spring planting gives the plants a chance to establish during the growing season before winter. Prepare the garden bed by digging 2 to 4 inches of compost, seasoned manure or leaf mold into the garden soil before planting. Adding organic matter to the soil improves drainage and nutrient levels around the plants.

    Transplanting

    • Transplant Trillium grandiflorum in late spring or summer when the flowers start to die back. Cut the plant material down to 1 inch above the soil line using a sharp pair of shears. Dig up the root ball with a shovel or garden fork and move it to the new growing location. Dig out a planting hole the same depth as the roots. Place the root ball into the hole and push excess soil around the roots. Apply water to settle the soil around the transplanted Trillium grandiflorum.

    Dividing and Planting

    • Like other herbaceous perennials, Trillium grandiflorum can be propagated by dividing the root ball. This is best done in late spring or summer when the flowers die back. Division is best done when transplanting Trillium grandiflorum. Dig up the root ball with a garden shovel or fork and divide the roots into sections, each having three or more growing shoots. Replant the sections in the garden or pot them in containers filled with potting soil.

    Planting Seeds

    • Plant Trillium grandiflorum seeds in summer after they ripen and dry on the plant. Once the flowers appear, seeds follow in five to seven weeks. Watch the seed pods; when the pods begin to turn brown and dry out, the seeds are ready to collect. Replant the seeds in a prepared garden bed 1/2 inch deep. Keep the seeds watered through the remainder of the dry summer season. When planted from seed, Trillium grandiflorum takes four to five years to flower.
