Building a Resilient IP Storage

IP Storage is an abbreviated term for Gigabit Ethernet backed Internet Protocol (IP) storage, which is used in Storage Area Network (SAN) environment. Usually, in a traditional SAN environment, Fibre channel framework is used. But with the advent of Gigabit Ethernet, internet protocol got revolutionized, in such a way, that, it is now being used as an alternative to Fibre Channel SAN.

The implementation of IP SAN storage has yielded similar benefits, which are seen in Fibre channel framework. And so this has increased the wide spread adoption of SANâEUR(TM)s in small to large scale enterprise data center. Factually speaking, the deployment of SAN environment, since, its innovation in 1990âEUR(TM)s, was shunned away, by most of the IT managers, of small to medium scale enterprises. Due to the complexity and interoperability issue, in Fibre channel (FC), along with its expensive implementation, the SAN deployment was mostly avoided.

But the option of storage over IP, offers an apt solution to all these issues, which are present in the framework of Fibre Channel and lives up to the expectations fetched from SAN storage. In order to simplify and ease the admin workload, over data management; many enterprises are in favor of the Internet Protocol storage. Large enterprises in the world are going for a contemporary storage over IP, as it supports class of applications, which pave way for securing their business goals.

IP storage implementation, allows the IT managers to go for the technological refreshments, which take place in virtualization and consolidation fields. Since, IP network is ubiquitous, the inter connection of Fibre Channel networks is possible and so the data storage becomes readily available, irrespective of its geographical location. Companies are in total control of ownership, as it creates a flexible environment for the SAN storage.

IP networking facilitates additional security and so the data storage over IP, facilitates encryption format. Moreover, features like congestion, dynamic rerouting, data retransmission and session integrity are also possible though Ethernet backed IP networked storage. With this support, the effect on functionality failures, during disaster recovery can be almost nullified.

IP Storage or the Internet Protocol Storage is nothing but data storage done in a Storage Area Network-SAN via a Gigabit internet. In logical terms, IP storage is based on the Operating system Interconnection which is an OSI standard and is in accordance with the International Standard Organization. These standards are based on the protocols, meant for addressing, formatting and sequencing the data for transmission for storage, in a network. The IP SAN can be located across the Metropolitan Area of Networks or in the Wide Area Networks as well. In Fibre Channel connected SANâEUR(TM)s, the protocols are used to channelize the framework for the Fiber Channel Internet protocol and this is a complex option, when compared to IP SAN storage. Since, Fiber Channel technology offers interoperability and high costs as a residue, the storage over IP stands tall as an substitute for it.
