How to Install an Exterior Light on Siding

    • 1). Cut power to the old exterior light at the house circuit box.

    • 2). Remove the screws that hold the old fixture to the ceiling. Disconnect the wires that are above it. Pull the light free, leaving the exposed electrical box.

    • 3). Spread a bead of caulk on the back of the foam mounting block that came with the new exterior light. Spread a bead along the top, as well as the sides of the back of the block, but not along the bottom so that water can escape if it gets in.

    • 4). Press the block over the electrical box and tight against the siding. You should still have access to three wires in the electrical box -- black, white and a bare copper ground wire -- through the hole in the block.

    • 5). Hold the light unit near the electrical box. Connect the white and black wires from the light to the corresponding colored wires coming out of the box. Make the connections by twisting wire nuts over each connection. Pull down the bare copper grounding wire from inside the electrical box and twist the end of it around the green grounding screw on the fixture. Tighten the grounding screw.

    • 6). Wrap each connection in electrician's tape.

    • 7). Lift the light fixture to the mounting block, pushing the wires into the box as you do. Attach the light to the electrical box by aligning the screw holes and threading in the provided screws through the hole in the mounting block.

    • 8). Turn on the electricity at the house circuit box. If the light works properly, caulk around the seam where the fixture meets the mounting block to seal off the inside of the fixture from water.
