    • A sun oven uses the heat of the sun's rays to cook food. The pot containing the food is placed on a heat trap, which usually consists of an insulated box with a thermal glass lid and mirrors to direct light into the heat trap. Use black pots when using a solar oven because they retain heat better.

    Cost

    • A sun oven uses solar energy to generate heat. Because you don't need to use electricity, gas or fuels to cook, you eliminate cost. In fact, people in third world countries are using solar ovens to prepare meals in an economical way. The solar oven lets you to bake, braise, stew, roast, boil and steam foods, eliminating the need to get different appliances for various cooking methods. If you don't want to buy a sun oven, you can even make one out of a cardboard box.

    Ease

    • A sun oven is easy to use; you only need to leave the food in the oven and let it cook. It reaches a temperature of 360 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, just like a conventional oven. The temperatures are distributed evenly throughout the sun oven, so that the food cooks evenly. The taste and texture of food cooked in a sun oven is also comparable to foods cooked using conventional methods.

    Safety

    • Because no electricity, gas or fuel is involved, a sun oven presents no fire danger. You can use a sun oven in parks that ban open flame. It emits none of the smoke or gases that conventional cooking methods generate, eliminating the risk of respiratory illnesses from smoke inhalation. It also presents no harm to the environment, using no fuels and releasing no greenhouse gases.

    Timing

    • A sun oven would still work even when there is a blackout, as long as the sun shines. While a sun oven would work well in sun-rich areas, it has limited usefulness in areas where there is little sunlight. When the sun is not out, the sun oven will not reach the temperatures required to efficiently cook food. It also takes a while to heat up, so your food will take longer too cook. A sun oven is also usually small, so it can only cook small quantities of food at a time.
