- 1). Turn off power to the switch. Unscrew and remove the switch plate. Remove the screws that hold the light switch to the switch box. Pull out the light switch and use a terminal screwdriver to remove the two black wires and the green ground wire. Remove the light switch.
- 2). Pull apart the two black wires and turn on the power. Touch one end of a voltage tester to the end of the ground wire and the other end of the tester to one of the black wires. With the tester still touching the ground wire, touch the end of the other black wire with the tester. The black wire that causes the tester to light up is the hot wire, which brings power to the switch. The other black wire is the load wire, which sends power to the light fixture. Turn off the power.
- 3). Push the black load wire into the red slot by the terminal. Tighten the red terminal screw. Push the black hot wire into the slot by the terminal marked black. Tighten its terminal screw. Push the ground wire into the slot by the terminal marked green. Tighten its terminal screw.
- 4). Push all of the wires into the back of the box. Push the dimmer switch into the box. Attach the dimmer to the box with two screws. Replace the switch cover. Turn on the power.
