What Do the Icons on My iPhone Mean?
- The icons appear in the bar at the very bottom of the home screen.
Phone
The phone icon is a green background with a white telephone on it. Touch this icon to make a phone call.
Mail
The mail icon is a sky background with a white envelope on it. Touch this icon to read and/or send email.
Safari
The Safari icon has a blue map background with a compass image on it. Touch this icon to launch Safari, which is the iPhone's native web browser.
iPod
The iPod icon has an orange background with a white iPod on it. Touch this icon to launch the phone's video and music player. - Calendar
The calendar icon looks like a page from a calendar. It has a mostly white background, with a red bar across the top. The red bar has the day of the week on it, and the date is displayed over the white background. Touch this icon to view your calendar(s) and to create new appointments.
Accessibility
The accessibility icon has a blue background with a white person spread-eagle on it. Touch this icon to access the following features: VoiceOver, Zoom, White on Black text, Mono Audio quality and Speak Auto-Text.
Voice Memos
The voice memos icon has a dark red background with an old-fashioned broadcast microphone on it. Touch this icon to launch an application that will let you record voice memos.
Notes
The notes icon looks like yellow notebook paper. Touch this icon to create new notes or to edit existing ones.
Settings
The settings icon looks like gray gears. Touch this icon to access all of your phone's settings, such as date and time, ringtone, ring volume, email and calendar settings, and 3G and WiFi settings.
Clock
The clock icon looks like a clock. Touch this icon to view the time in other parts of the world, to create alarms, or to use the stopwatch or timer.
Calculator
The calculator icon is represented by +, _, x and = signs. Touch this icon to launch the calculator. Turn your phone sideways and it becomes a scientific calculator. - Messages
The messages icon has a green background with a white thought bubble on it. Touch this icon to read and send text and picture messages.
Contacts
The contacts icon is a personal telephone book that says "Contacts" on it. Touch this icon to manage existing contacts or to add a new contact to your phone.
Photos
The photos icon has a blue background with a dandelion on it. Touch this icon to view all of the photos and videos you've taken on your iPhone. You can also use this feature to view all of your saved picture messages and photo attachments that you received via email.
Camera
The camera icon looks like a camera lens. Touch this icon whenever you want to take new photos or videos.
YouTube
The YouTube icon looks like an old television set. Touch this icon to search and watch videos on YouTube. - Compass
The compass icon looks like the face of a compass. Touch this icon to launch the compass, which will show you the direction you are facing and the geographical coordinates of your location.
Maps
The maps icon looks like a map with a highway 280 sign on it. Use this icon to launch Google Maps. - Stocks
The stocks icon has a blue background with a white graph line going across it. Touch this icon to view current stock prices.
Weather
The weather icon has a blue background with a sun on it. Touch this icon to view current weather conditions.
iTunes Store
The iTunes icon has a purple background with a white music note on it. Touch this icon to search for, preview and download music, ringtones, movies and TV shows.
App Store
The app store icon has a blue background with a white A on it. Touch this icon to search and download new apps for your phone.
Nike + iPod
The Nike + iPod icon has an orange background with a white Nike logo on it. If you purchase a sensor, this application will give you feedback on speed, distance, time and calories during a walking/running workout routine.
