- The iPhone generally freezes when its memory is overloaded. This can be caused by multitasking -- running more than one application at once -- or it can result from opening a large file, such as an app with a large database or a high-definition video. In addition, some apps may have glitches that cause them to freeze, and if you do not have the latest updates for your iTunes and iPhone Operating System software, your phone may freeze because of an internal software problem.
- Whenever iTunes tells you that an update is available, download and install it. Sync and update your iPhone regularly -- at least once a week. In addition, update your applications regularly as well. If you tap the App Store icon on your iPhone's home screen, you can tap "Updates" in the bottom row of buttons, and you will see a list of updates available for your apps. Finally, avoid trying to open too many apps at once.
- When your iPhone freezes, don't start pressing buttons and tapping the screen repeatedly. Let it rest for a minute; it may resolve the problem on its own. If not, press the "Sleep/Wake" button on the top of the phone for 10 seconds, or until you see the power screen. Power the phone off, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
- If you cannot reach the power screen, press and hold the "Sleep/Wake" and "Home" buttons concurrently for 10 seconds. This resets the phone. If this still does not work, connect your iPhone to your computer and sync it. If you still experience a problem, connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, click on your iPhone under "Devices" in the left column, and click "Restore" in the center of the window. This will restore your iPhone back to factory settings, so only use this as a last resort.
