How to Grow Coconuts Indoors
- 1). Place the coconut, with the outer husk intact, in a bucket and cover it with water. Allow it to soak for three days, changing the water daily.
- 2). Combine equal parts of sand and potting soil. Spread a 2-inch layer of gravel on the bottom of the nursery pot. Pour in the sand/soil mixture until the pot is three-fourths full.
- 3). Remove the coconut from the bucket and place it on the ground. Allow it to rock until it stops. This is the position in which the coconut should be planted.
- 4). Place the coconut on top of the soil in the nursery pot. Add soil until one-third of the coconut remains exposed. Place the pot in a shady area where the temperature is at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit and keep the soil moist.
- 5). Water the coconut after germination enough to keep the soil barely moist.
- 6). Use a humidifier in the room where the coconut is kept. The fronds will discolor without humidity.
- 7). Feed the coconut for the first time when it reaches 3 years of age. Use a palm fertilizer at half the strength suggested on the label.
