Are There Different Versions of TV Shows for Different Locations?
- The popular British comedy show "The Office" has been remade into six foreign versions, the most popular of which being the NBC's take starring Steve Carell. The original version contained many British references and idiosyncrasies that would not have translated well for foreign audiences
- Realities shows such as "Big Brother," Simon Fuller's "Idol" format and "The Apprentice" have all been licensed to a multitude of international broadcasters earning their owners and developers a fortune. Interest in an English or American version of any of these shows would perhaps not fare as well as a locally-produced version in Asia and parts of Europe.
- Many shows, mostly American, achieve huge international success without being remade by a foreign production company. "Seinfeld," "Friends," "24" and "Lost" being just a few examples that have fared particularly well in their original format internationally.
