Border flowers for the Dallas area add depth and color to a front yard walkway or backyard garden. These flowers are typically small varieties that are planted vertically along both sides of the walkway in the front of a house or in the backyard, around the border of a garden or border of the back of a home. A small 12-inch tall wire fence can help protect border flowers from invasive plants but you can plant these flowers without a garden fence as well.

Pansies are not native to Texas, but these flowers grow extremely well in Dallas and pansies can really add color to a garden or walkway border. These flowers come in many varieties and colors. Most pansies are yellow in the center with tiny black flecks which resemble a face. The colors also blend together with different shades of yellow, purple and red. Some pansies are more blended while others are more solid. These flowers prefer full sun and rich well-drained soils. If the soil is dry you can increase soil fertility by tilling the ground 5 inches deep and adding compost or humus. Pansies only need light watering once per week.

Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas and make excellent borders in the Dallas area. The flower grows in a cluster with long green stems and leaves towards the base of the plant. Blooming time is from March until May. The blooms are usually deep purple or a combination of blue, white and purple hues. The clusters are tightly packed when the flower first begins to bloom and over time the flower bud opens more, which creates gaps between the clusters. The flower is still stunning at all stages. These flowers grow about 1 foot tall on average and enjoy full sun, well-drained soil and weekly watering. Over-watering can kill the plants.

Plant tulips in late spring or early winter.
