    • 1). Let the Mantis tiller cool completely before performing winterizing maintenance for storage.

    • 2). Drain the fuel from the Mantis tiller. (This should be done anytime it will be idle for two weeks or longer, not just for winter storage.) Unscrew the fuel cap by turning it counterclockwise, and pull it straight off to remove.

    • 3). Place a funnel in an open gas can, and tilt the tiller's gas tank over it to drain all of the fuel into the can.

    • 4). Place the gas tank cap back on the tiller, and turn it clockwise to close.

    • 5). Start the engine by pulling the pull cord. Let the engine run until it dies to use up all fuel in the fuel lines and carburetor. This is to prevent the gumming that occurs when it evaporates.

    • 6). Unplug the spark plug wire by pulling it straight off the spark plug. From behind, the spark plug is located on the right side, in the center next to the gas tank.

    • 7). Place a 3/4-inch spark plug wrench on the top of the spark plug, and unscrew it counterclockwise. Pull the spark plug straight out.

    • 8). Pour 1 tsp. of two-cycle oil into the spark plug chamber, and pull the starter cord slowly three times. This coats the inside of the cylinder, lubricating it for storage.

    • 9). Screw the spark plug in by turning it clockwise and tightening with the spark plug wrench.

Remove the air filter cover by grasping the thumbscrew in the middle and turning it counterclockwise. From behind, the air filter is on the left side of the Mantis tiller, in the center. Pull the air filter straight out from the cover, and blow it off on all sides with an air compressor to remove and dust, dirt and debris.

Replace the air filter and cover, and screw the thumbscrew clockwise.

Spray the tines of the Mantis tiller with a spray lubricant. Completely coat each tine from the base to the tip, on the top and underside.

    • 13

Spray the metal throttle cable that attaches to the throttle lever with a spray lubricant.

Turn the black knob on each side of the handles counterclockwise. Release the handles and fold them forward. Tighten the black handle knobs by turning them clockwise. With the handles in the folded position, the tiller requires less storage space.

Store the tiller in an upright position in a dry storage area.
