How to Activate Used Equipment

    • 1). Inspect the used equipment to find an embossed stamp or label indicating the name of a service carrier or company provider. Cell phone service companies such as Verizon and Sprint have labels on cell phones that are sold specifically for use with their services. Look on the top or bottom side of TV access receiver boxes to locate the name of the service provider.

    • 2). Review any user manuals that are included with the used equipment. Check to see what the manual says about service providers and the activation process. Read about how to set or change switches or channels to active the equipment. The manual may specify particular steps required for activation.

    • 3). Contact the service provider company indicated on the label. A telephone number may be included, but if it isn't, check local telephone listings for a current number. If you acquired the used electronic equipment elsewhere, the service provider may not be available in your region.

    • 4). Discuss with the service company the requirements to activate your equipment. It will ask for the model number, and with cell phones, if a SIM card is inside the phone. This information will help the company determine if it can activate the equipment. DirecTV requires a receiver ID number and a separate user account to activate used equipment.

    • 5). Sign a contract and pay a fee to activate the requested services. Once you agree to the services you want, you'll be issued new access codes to activate the equipment. Cell phone service providers may also provide new SIM cards to use with the new activation codes.
