    Camera Operation

    • Turn on the camera with the On/Off switch on the back of the camera. Press the shutter release on the top-right corner of the camera to take a picture. Turn the switch on the lens to the "A" position and hold the shutter down halfway to activate the 10D's autofocus mode before recording an exposure. Turn the switch on the lens to "M" mode to activate manual focus. Turn the focus ring on the lens to adjust image clarity.

    Automatic Exposure Modes

    • Turn the mode dial to optimize the 10D for different photographic situations. The exposure dial, on the top of the camera body, has three categories: basic, image zone, and creative. Full auto mode is the only exposure mode included in the basic category. Full auto mode will create an exposure and deploy the on-camera flash when necessary, requiring the photographer to only point and shoot to take a picture. The image zone category is similar to auto mode in that the camera creates an exposure for the photographer, but image zone offers more exposure options for the photographer to chose from. Image zone modes are named after the shooting situations in which they are most appropriate. Image zone modes include settings such portrait, landscape, and flower modes. On the mode dial they're represented with corresponding icons.

    Creative Exposure Modes

    • Creative shooting mode are included on the 10D for more experienced photographers who want to have more control over settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Creative modes include program mode, aperture-priority mode, shutter speed-priority mode and manual mode. Program mode, like full auto mode, provides the photographer with a starting exposure. Program mode allows the photographer to change the settings such as white balance, ISO, focal points, and metering. Aperture-priority mode allows users to create customized exposures based around the aperture setting. The photographer sets the aperture and the shutter speed adjusts to make a proper exposure. Shutter speed priority mode repeats this same process, but the exposure is based on the shutter rather than the aperture.

    Image Settings

    • Configure image settings such as white balance, metering mode, ISO, and drive mode by using the buttons on the top side of the camera body. Hold the buttons while simultaneously using the control dial to change settings. White balance shells the camera adjust to different colors of light. The metering mode helps the camera judge the best exposure in varying situations. The ISO determines how sensitive the camera is to light. A higher ISO helps the camera perform low light while a low ISO keeps image grain to a minimum. The camera drive mode determines whether the 10D will shoot single exposures or a continual sequence of frames.

    Image Review

    • The Canon 10D allows photographers to review pictures immediately after taking them. Press the playback button, marked by a boxed triangle icon on the back of the camera, to view the last picture taken. Scroll through the contents of the camera memory card using the control dial on the back of the camera. Press the "Info" button to view exposure information about each frame.

    Switching Lenses

    • Power off the camera and press the lens release button to unlock the lens from its mounts. Turn the lens counterclockwise until it is removed completely. Mount a lens to the 10D by lining up the red dots on the lens and the lens mounts. Turn the lens clockwise until a clicking noise indicates that the lens is properly mounted.

    Batteries and Memory

    • Remove the battery by opening the panel on the bottom of the camera body and pressing the Battery lock lever. Charge the battery by connecting it to the charger and plugging it into a wall outlet. Remove the memory card by opening the panel on the side of the camera and pressing the memory card's eject button.
