    • 1). Pop the hood while the engine is running. Locate the fan belt on the engine. Shut off the engine. If the belt appears worn, or was squeaking when running, or has cracks, breaks or splits, replace the belt.

    • 2). Loosen the adjustment bolt on the accessory mounted to the other end of the belt using an open-end wrench, which could be the air conditioning, power steering, or alternator, depending on which one is worn. Then loosen the pivot bolt using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 3). Push the accessory toward the middle of the engine using your hands. Pull the belt off the accessory and then out and away from the fan, removing it from the car.

    • 4). Put the replacement belt around the fan and then around the fan belt pulley and the accessory pulley. Pull back the accessory and tighten the adjustment bolt and pivoting bolts on the accessory using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 5). Start the engine and verify that the belt is not slipping. If it is, readjust the accessory so that the belt is tighter.
