How to Change the Taillights on a 2005 VW Convertible Beetle
- 1). Open the cover that covers the tail light assembly. With the hatch open, pry a flathead screwdriver in between the plastic cover and the lining of the hatch. The plastic cover will pop off and expose the light assembly, which is a plastic circle.
- 2). Pull the plastic round light assembly out partially. You may need to pry it off gently with the screwdriver.
- 3). Turn knob that is exposed when you remove plastic circle in a counterclockwise direction. The knob holds the tail light assembly in the car.
- 4). Pry the taillight off the back of the Volkswagen. Use the flathead screwdriver or a non-marring tool and wedge it under the bottom of the tail light. Move the tool around the lens to loosen it and pull off the Beetle.
- 5). Remove the bulb socket from the assembly by pulling straight out.
- 6). Pull bulb straight out of socket and replace with new bulb. Take care not to touch new bulb with bare hands, wear gloves or use a rag. The oil from skin can cause the bulb to heat unevenly when in use and crack.
- 7). Push bulb socket back into assembly. Replace assembly into car by pushing in until you hear a click or popping noise that indicates it is secure.
- 8). Screw knob back into the inside of car to secure light assembly.
- 9). Replace the plastic circle that covers the assembly in the back and place plastic cover back onto the vehicle.
