    • 1). Purchase an iPod Touch repair kit. The iPod Touch cannot be disassembled without a few special tools that are only available in the repair kit. A standard kit comes with a few screwdrivers and a tool known as a Safe Open Tool. The Safe Open Tool is a nylon tool that will allow you to open the case, as well as pry apart various internal components without damaging them. (See "Resources").

    • 2). Insert the Safe Open Tool into the gap between the rubber seal on the front panel glass and the chrome bezel surrounding the device. Carefully pry the two halves apart by sliding the tool around the outside of the iPod Touch. As you slide it around you will notice clips holding the two halves together. Use the tool to disengage the clips.

    • 3). Remove the three Phillips screws along the bottom of the iPod Touch. Remove the four screws along the top.

    • 4). Use your Safe Open Tool to carefully pry the LCD clip from the iPod's system board.

    • 5). Carefully pry up the LCD screen. The screen is held in place with a mild adhesive, so lift the screen with slight pressure to remove the adhesive. Set the screen aside. This will reveal the metal backing plate.

    • 6). Remove the screws holding the metal backing plate in place and lift up the plate. Lift the plate up slowly---be careful not to rip any of the internal cables.

    • 7). Use the Safe Open Tool to pry the battery from the metal plate. The battery is held in place by mild adhesive. Carefully pry it up with the tool, and the adhesive will come loose. The battery is actually soldered to the iPod's system board, so don't attempt to disconnect it from the board.

    • 8). Remove the screws holding the system board in place. Lift it and the battery out of the rear cover of the iPod Touch. The large orange cable is attached to the rear cover by mild adhesive. Slowly pry it loose from the cover.
