How to Cover a Fig Tree for the Winter
- 1). Drive four wooden stakes into the ground on all sides of the fig tree. Hammer them at least 3 inches into the ground for stability. The stakes should be at least as tall as the fig tree.
- 2). Wrap mesh or plastic netting around the outside of the stakes to create a breathable bin. Secure the netting to the wooden stakes with a staple gun.
- 3). Fill the bin with insulating material such as straw, hay, old clothes, corn husks or fallen leaves. Add as much material as needed to fill the bin.
- 4). Wrap the bin with a protective layer of burlap. Wind the burlap around the bin from the base to the top, covering all sides. Loop the burlap over the top to cover the top of the tree. Secure the burlap with staples or with twine, wrapping the twine around the burlap and the bin.
- 5). Cover the burlap with a heavy-duty plastic garbage bag to prevent the insulation from getting wet. Leave the fig tree alone until the weather warms to 40 F day and night, then undo the fig tree wrap.
