300 - A Review

The most notable feature of the movie was the bronze colored visual filter applied throughout the entire movie.
300 is the movie interpretation of the preceding comic book also drably entitled 300.
In fact, there is actual Greek history regarding King Leonidas & his three hundred Spartans.
Speculatively, Hollywood was not going to have any Spartan warriors wearing chest plates because sexy bare skin can sell more movie tickets, DVDs, etc as compared to the boring & monotonous body armor common in Hollywood's "Greek" movies of the yesteryears.
The story began when Persian messengers were sent to announce the Persian King Xerxes intention of making Sparta an ally to Persia.
The only demands of King Xerxes was that Sparta provide the Persian army with "Earth & water" as a sign of submission.
However, the validity of the proposal was unclear in true history.
As we know, movie makers are common to apply misinterpretation of history in order to make a film more interesting & marketable.
Upon hearing the word "submission", King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) told the Persian messenger that there were plenty of earth & water to be found at the bottom of the Sparta well.
King Leonidas; in a state of fury, kicked the Persian messenger into the deep & dark Spartan well.
The companions of the Persian messenger received a similarly cruel fate.
Another example of sadistic humor in the movie was when his captain (Vincent Regan) killed a wounded & unarmed Persian soldier while King Leonidas said to him, "There is no reason for us not to be civil.
" Some corrupt politicians like Theron (Dominic West) & mystics of Sparta rallied against a full scale war with the Persians.
King Leonidas had no choice but to march with only three hundred bodyguards into battle against more than a million Persian soldiers.
He had a plan & was determined to make a statement about the superiority of Spartan soldiers.
More so, there was no mention of food or supplies for the King Leonidas's men in the movie.
It just seemed that the three hundred Spartan warriors marched northwards without any obvious supplies.
It was an unimportant detail to the movie makers.
Continuous stream of fighting scenes of the movie can keep an action movie fan glued to the screen & therefore may excuse the lack of some similar small details.
Anyway, it helps to potray the Spartan soldiers as legendary & almost "godlike" themselves without the need of nourishment.
On one hand, the Persians had power & money.
The self proclaimed Godking, Xerxes facial side profile was embossed on every Persian gold coin rewarded to the treacherous traitors of Sparta.
King Xerxes's character was all about his extreme form of self adulation, wealth & his might of possessing a million slaves.
On the other hand, the Spartans had their perfect warrior beliefs & held strongly to their sacred Spartan law.
The stubborn & idealistic King Leonidas disregarded reason, not because of emotion but because of pride.
He & his fellow Spartan warriors placed the yearning for a glorious death above everything else, including his own wife; Queen Gorgo (Leana Headey) & son.
Fighting for the cause of freedom only seemed to be a matter of perception.
The glory of death on the battlefield was the Spartan goal.
Both ideologies can have mass of followers following any idea regardless of the idea being insane & leading to unnecessary loss of life.
All the three hundred Spartans including King Leonidas were surrounded at the pass of Thermopylae & killed in the end of the movie.
The Greek traitor, Ephialtes (Andrew Tiernan) informed the Persians of an alternative route past the defending Spartans in the exchange of wealth & anything that he desired beyond his wildest dreams.
Only one Spartan warrior, Dilios (David Wenham) was ordered to return to Sparta by King Leonidas because he possessed the required conversation skills.
His mission was to rally the Sparta nation in facing the incoming threat.
Less than a year later, the marauding Persian army faced the 10,000 Spartans & 30,000 free Greeks.
Fans of the movie "Braveheart" can look forward to the massive battle scenes anticipated of the movie sequel to 300.
Viewers looking for plenty of decapitating action, sadistic humor, chiseled torsos & special effects need to look no further as the movie 300 has all of the above.
Presented in a narrative style & visually bronzed tone for the historical effect; the movie 300 can be one of the most talked about movie of the year 2007.
