    Language

    • The language of Chile is Castellano. This is the formal name of the Spanish language from the providence of Castilla. Chileans speak a dialect of Spanish with some distinct characteristics. There is a version of the voceo found in Argentina that is used in some regions and settings.

    Religion

    • The Spaniards brought the traditional Catholic religion. While many Chileans are Catholic, compared with other Latin American countries, other Christian denominations and religions have a large percentage of followers in the country.

    Foods

    • The Chilean culture received meats like pork, beef and lamb from the Spanish. Milk products, cheeses, grains like wheat, garlic and vinegar were all introduced by the Spaniards.

    Music

    • The guitar brought over by the Spanish became the primary instrument used by the troubadour of the "new song" movement of the 1960s in Chile. Their politically inspired lyrics and rhythms motivated many people to political action.

    Architecture

    • The Spanish design left its imprint on the layout of Chilean cities and towns. A central plaza or town square formed the base from which streets and lanes extended outward in four cardinal points.
