How to Clean Clogged Filters on Western Plows

    • 1). Lower the snowplow blade to the ground.

    • 2). Place a drain pan beneath the hydraulic unit. Remove the drain plug located at the left front corner of the hydraulic reservoir. Allow the hydraulic reservoir to drain completely. Replace the drain plug.

    • 3). Remove the two hydraulic pressure lines from the fittings on the hydraulic reservoir.

    • 4). Manually move the plow blade fully left and then fully right to purge residual fluid from the lines.

    • 5). Remove the two cap screws securing the motor/pump unit to the top of the reservoir. Lift the motor/pump unit off the hydraulic reservoir. Remove the motor flange gasket from the top of the hydraulic reservoir.

    • 6). Unscrew the pump inlet filter screen from the fluid intake port at the bottom of the pump unit.

    • 7). Wash the pump inlet filter screen with an evaporative solvent such as brake cleaner. Blow the screen clean with compressed air.

    • 8). Reinstall the pump inlet filter screen to the fluid intake port.

    • 9). Place the motor flange gasket on the motor mount on top of the hydraulic reservoir. Install the motor/pump unit into the hydraulic reservoir. Tighten the motor mount cap screws from 180 inch pounds to 240 inch pounds of torque.

      Reattach the two hydraulic pressure lines to their fittings on the side of the hydraulic unit.

      Remove the fluid fill plug on top of the hydraulic reservoir and the fluid level plug on the side of the hydraulic reservoir.

      Fill the reservoir with Western High Performance Hydraulic fluid or one of the manufacturer's recommended substitutes until hydraulic fluid runs out the fluid level plug on the side of the hydraulic reservoir.

      Install the fluid level plug and the fluid fill plug.
