You are most likely aware that crime is a major concern no matter where you live.
You can never take enough actions to make sure your home and family are safe.
This includes installing a home security system so that you have someone watching over you home even when you can't be there to do it yourself.
Of course, not everyone can afford a home security system, but you can still perform preventive actions that can help make your home and family safer.
Here are 10 suggestions that will make your home safer.
1.
Ensure that all of your exterior doors are made out of solid wood or steel.
Do not put the hinges of your doors on the outside.
If they are on the outside, the door can easily be removed by anyone determined to get in.
2.
Consider getting a home security system installed.
Even if you think you can't afford it, you might be able to.
You don't have to get a top-of-the-line system.
You should be able to afford a basic one that simply sounds an alarm when someone breaches your home.
If you get a system, be sure to turn it on at all times and display stickers and signs around your home to act as a deterrent to would-be criminals.
3.
Do not leave a greeting on your answering machine that indicates you are away from your house.
Simply state that you aren't available and will get back to them soon.
4.
Keep your shades drawn and curtains closed so people cannot see what is in your home.
Valuables make extremely tempting targets.
5.
Etch an identifying mark on your belongings so that if they get stolen, they can be recovered more easily.
Your driver's license number is perfect for this use.
6.
Inventory your valuable possessions and keep it in a location separate from your house.
7.
If you are on vacation, keep your car in the driveway or have a neighbor keep one there and move it every so often.
8.
Never keep your garage door open unless you are in the garage.
9.
Do not give your home keys to your mechanic when you hand over your car keys.
There are simply too many ways they could get lost or duplicated, making your house more vulnerable.
10.
Change your locks as soon as you move into a new location.
Do not simply assume that the previous residents gave you all copies of the keys.
There are, of course, many other security tips, but these basic ten will get you started on the path toward full home security.
